One of the things you learn quickly when you work for a large company is how well executives can cover up failure. I think, to a large extent, that is what is happening with Linux. Folks are covering up its failure with rhetoric, and that is keeping it from growing to its potential. I'm an analyst, and particularly when we challenge popular views, folks want to know what is behind those views.

Linux fans love to debate the pros and cons of myriad technologies, but none more than operating systems -- and you can bet the usual winner isn't based in Redmond or Cupertino. "Quantum3D has announced a rugged, battery-operable computer aimed at video-intensive military applications. The Thermite TVC 3.0 runs Linux, according to the company, and features Core 2 Solo or Duo processors and a variety of video capture and graphics options.

Microsoft Fights VMware As it Flirts With Linux
Microsoft's forthcoming Windows Server 2008 provides a two-for-one bonus: virtualization software with the operating system itself, and potentially closer integration with some Linux operating systems than it has ever offered before, according to an early, initial look at the server's Release Candidate 1 (RC1).

Linux: "It's Polished Enough For Us," Says New York Stock Exchange
Although it has not yet hopped on the server virtualization bandwagon, the New York Stock Exchange - as it builds out the NYSE Hybrid Market trading system that it launched last year - is betting big on Linux. NYSE Euronext CIO Steve Rubinow told a reporter that the NYSE is investing heavily in x86-based Linux systems and blade servers.

The Linux Foundation's Jim Zemlin: Linux Adoption's Next Phase
The Open Source Development Labs merged with the Free Standard Group on Jan. 21, 2007. The new organization became The Linux Foundation, which now spearheads the goals of Linux standardization, promotion and protection. Jim Zemlin, formerly the executive director of the Free Standards Group, took the reins as executive director.

I read an article on CNN a couple days ago about Linux and ewaste reduction. It wasn't until I spent far too long shoveling my driveway tonight, though, that I had time to give the article any thought. At first blush, it seems to be another ringing endorsement...

The Year in Linux-on-the-Desktop
Linux , an alternative open-source operating system, is nothing new to small business. As a server platform, Linux is widely used to share files and run Web servers, not to mention routing e-mail and serving up the shared calendar and task capabilities that compete with Microsoft Exchange.

Choosing a Linux Distro, Part 1: Kicking the Tires
Running Microsoft Windows or Apple's Mac OS X gives users about the same amount of flexibility as was offered to early car buyers. They could drive any kind of car they wanted, as long as it was a Model T and as long as it was black. When the free open source Linux OS first showed up, early developers offered much the same set of options.

"Cloudbook" UMPC to Run Googlish Linux
"Everex has confirmed plans to ship a UMPC (ultra-mobile PC) with a 7-inch screen, similar to competitor Asus's EEE PC. A source close to the company revealed that the device--codenamed 'Cloudbook'--will ship with the Google Apps-oriented 'gOS' Linux distribution early next year.

Linux Blog Safari: Alabama Now a Third-World Country?
It's not too often the public schools figure prominently in the Linux blogs, but sure enough, this week they drew a surprising amount of discussion on a few different sites. Specifically, news broke on Tuesday that the mayor of Birmingham, Ala., has signed a purchase agreement for 15,000 laptops from One Laptop Per Child, making the city's schools the first in the nation to receive the XO devices.
