My hard drive died on me recently and while I am in the process of getting a new computer I still have a lot of valuable data on the old computer's hard drive that I need. How can I recover this hard drive data?

If you have a laptop, it can be trickier than with a desktop, but this recently happened to my fiance's Macbook. Unfortunately the drive was thoroughly kaput, but there are a number of things you can do, ranging from expensive to super expensive.

There is a company out there that offers to recover certain types of data for about $2000. I can't remember their name. you might want to try freezing your hard drive overnight and installing it back in to boot from. Be prepared to move the files to another hard drive immediately.

Alternatively, you can try to mount it into an external case and try to access the files alone. It's hard to give you exact information aside from this since i don't know what kind of OS you are running, or the size of the disk.

At the risk of sounding redundant (I'm sure you've come across this already), but i guess now you'll be backing up your files in the future, the only sure-fire way of recovering lost data.

In the future, check out free back up software for your computer. I've included it below, and it seems like a fairly useful article.

good luck!
