A compromised system, a lost backup tape, a stolen laptop, or a disgruntled employee can expose a company to legal, financial, and public relation problems if any customer data is breached.

The scope of the problem is enormous and growing, as hackers and thieves are targeting corporate data to commit ID theft as well as credit card and financial fraud. When such breaches occur, corporate images can be destroyed, and customers often lose confidence with the company. Companies need to take steps to safeguard customer data.
