Since the beginning of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) in the early 1960's there have been many changes that required prompt and decisive action on the part of IT organizations worldwide. Some of these transitions have been less demanding than others, but for the most part, companies have to overcome major obstacles in order to stay abreast of changes without impacting day-to-day business operations. This paper has four main objectives:
  1. Discuss the history of ERP and transitions along with key takeaways for the business and technical challenges.
  2. Identify specific management challenges around transitioning ERP environments of today and strategies to mitigate risk around those challenges
  3. Suggest possible scenarios for the next major ERP transition and discuss possible challenges
  4. Deliver a brief explanation of what Quest Software is doing to help companies mitigate business and technical risks during these transitions
