The solution to managing the complexity of software development is to "stay in control." But what gives developers the control they need? All process improvement initiatives and quality guidelines, from CMMI to ISO/IEC 12207, recommend a configuration management solution. Configuration Management (CM) is the discipline that applies control to the lifecycle of digital assets. To ensure successful development, a configuration management solution should offer developers a proven, team-oriented workflow approach that scales to meet their needs – from small teams to large distributed teams. However, for most nondevelopers it is difficult to grasp the full magnitude of the "control" issue. This paper will use an allegory to broaden the understanding of one of the most important challenges that software teams have today.
