Open Source CMS Isn't Free (It's Not Even Cheap)

As software that is available under a different licensing arrangement, open source isn't really in conflict with commercially installed software, or software delivered as a service (SaaS). Open source software still needs to be implemented, configured, maintained, managed, upgraded and tweaked. The real work on a Web project begins after launch; and bugs and software issues are only a small part of support issues. The paper goes on to perform a cost analysis, arriving neatly at the conclusion that while open source is definitely attractive, it is by no means free. It may, in fact, result in a bigger management overhead. |
